Four killings in 24-hour period in Charlotte

Four people were killed in a 24-hour period over the weekend in Charlotte over the weekend, capping a violent stretch in the city.

  • The first was reported on Saturday at around 11 p.m. Police were called to Coyote Joe's on Wilkinson Boulevard, where a man outside had a gun. A police officer "perceived an imminent deadly threat" and shot the man, killing him.
  • On Sunday, just before 1 p.m., police were called to Nobles Avenue near Southwest District Park. They found a man who had been shot and killed.
  • At 10 p.m., police were called to Old Camden Road in east Charlotte, where they found a man dead of a gunshot wound.
  • An hour later, at around 11 p.m. Sunday, three people were shot on University City Boulevard near North Tryon Street. One man died and two were being treated for their injuries.

As of late Monday morning, police had not identified any of the victims or provided any details about what led to the shootings.

The killings appeared to push Charlotte to 111 total homicides for 2024, according to WFAE's count. That would be the highest total in three years, surpassing 95 in 2023 and 107 in 2022.
