CMS OKs Construction Contracts For Two Language Magnet Schools

Two new K-8 schools to open in 2021 will replace Waddell Language Academy in south Charlotte, which will be converted to a high school.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board approved construction contracts for two new foreign-language magnet schools Tuesday.

One will be at the site of the old J.M. Alexander Middle School in Huntersville. The other will be at the old Nations Ford Elementary site in south Charlotte.

When the two K-8 schools open in 2021, they’ll replace Waddell Language Academy in south Charlotte, which will be converted to a high school. The new schools, like Waddell, will offer immersion programs where teachers and students speak Chinese, French, German or Japanese throughout the day.

Each contract is for about $35 million, with construction expected to start later this year. The money comes from a $922 million school bond approved in 2017.
