Ardrey Kell Principal Jamie Brooks said in a message to families Thursday that she’s retiring, effective June 1, after being suspended with pay earlier this month.
Brooks said that the decision “was not made lightly, as my heart and soul are committed to Ardrey Kell and CMS.”
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says Assistant Principal Tomica Wright will continue as the high school’s lead administrator for the remainder of the school year. Brooks was suspended May 2, though CMS has declined to offer an explanation.
Ardrey Kell faced controversy this year, particularly after the family of a female Muslim student accused a male student at the school of attacking their daughter because of her religion.
The family had criticized the high school’s handling of the incident, but it’s unclear whether Brooks’ suspension was related.
