If you want to see how snow can pretty much shut down a city, go to the Hawthorne Lane overpass at Independence. A couple of snowplows were making their way down the outbound side late Wednesday afternoon. That stretch of road was closed.
“Earlier it was three lanes of traffic backed up from the top of the hill all the way down to the other side of the bridge, just backed up,” says Andrew Silsbee.
He went to work today in South Park. Only a handful of his co-workers showed up, so he called it quits early.
“I went in at eight just to get some work done. You can’t do much from the house on a laptop, but then I left at 10:30 to avoid what happened here.”
Tiffany Lynn and Joe Duke and their co-workers got out early, too.
“We just left our salon. We had a couple walk-ins, but decided to get out and have fun with everyone else,” says Lynn.
They’re looking for a good hill.
“People are talking about bringing snowboards to the park and taking pizza pans, whatever was in the garage was going to get used for sledding,” says Lynn.
“We’ve got five sleds and they’re all out. This is the time to do it,” adds Duke.
One woman in their group breaks out a sled and slides down an empty snow-packed stretch of Hawthorne lane.
