Gov. McCrory Supports 6 Percent Raise For Teachers

As state budget negotiations continued today in Raleigh, Governor Pat McCrory said he would support a House plan to give teachers an average six percent raise.

The governor originally called for teachers to receive a three percent raise, but he now says he can live with a six percent increase in order to reach a budget resolution. A compromise plan was due on the Governor’s desk more than a week ago when the new fiscal year began. McCrory says he’s not comfortable with an 11 percent raise for teachers, which the Senate plan calls for, because he says he doesn’t see any way of providing such a large raise without cutting thousands of teaching assistant positions or reducing the number of Medicaid recipients. The Senate’s plan originally called for cutting funding for teaching assistants as a way to pay for the 11 percent raise. McCrory says he will veto the Senate plan or any plan resembling it.
