Sun. Headlines: Comments Sought On Voter ID Rules

VoterID.NC.gov

New rules to implement North Carolina’s 2013 Voter ID law are now up for public comment. The draft regulations from the State Board of Elections were released Friday, and will determine how precinct officials decide whether someone has the required photo identification to vote in person starting in 2016.

Nine public hearings are planned across the state, beginning with a June 3 meeting in Raleigh. There’s a hearing June 8 from 5-7pm at the Hal Marshall auditorium in Charlotte and another in Boone on June 10. Written comments are due by June 30.

Meanwhile suits challenging the law are expected to be tried in state and federal courts this summer.

HALEY BLASTS FELLOW REPUBLICANS

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says fellow Republicans in the state legislature aren’t conservative enough.  At the South Carolina state Republican convention Saturday, Haley told delegates the majority of Republicans in the GOP-controlled House and Senate have violated party principles in recent years … by pushing a legislative pay raise, new bond debt and higher taxes for road construction. Most convention delegates applauded the governor's remarks, though some lawmakers were visibly aggravated during her speech.  Also Saturday, delegates re-elected Matt Moore as state party chairman, for a second two-year term.

CORNELIUS POLICE OFFICER SHOT

A Cornelius police lieutenant is expected to make a full recovery after he was shot in the stomach Saturday while responding to a call about a domestic dispute. A 16-year-old boy is in Mecklenburg County Jail, charged with shooting Lt. James Quattlebaum around 11:30am.  When officers arrived at the home on Coachmans Trace, they came under fire.  A second officer returned fire, hitting the suspect at least once.  The 16-year-old’s injuries were minor. He’s due in court Tuesday on charges including attempted murder, shooting a police officer and marijuana possession. EPISCOPAL BISHOP NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP

A bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina is one of four finalists to lead the Episcopal church in the United States.  The Right Rev. Michael Curry of Raleigh joins other candidates from Ohio, Connecticut and Florida as a nominee for the job of chief pastor of the Episcopal Church.  The new leader will begin a nine-year term on Nov. 1.

The church announced in a news release that other candidates are The Rt. Rev. Tom Breidenthal of Southern Ohio, The Rt. Rev. Ian Douglas of Connecticut and The Rt. Rev.  Dabney Smith of Southwest Florida.

The 62-year-old Curry was elected bishop in North Carolina in 2000. He began his ministry in 1968 as deacon-in-charge at St. Stephen's church in Winston-Salem.

CRAFT BEER MAKERS FAIL TO WIN EXPANDED SALES

At the N.C. state legislature this spring, craft beer-makers failed in their efforts to expand limits on how much beer they can sell themselves, without a middle man. North Carolina has more home-grown breweries than any state south of Pennsylvania and brewers say greater self-distribution would create more jobs. The lawmaker who sponsored the bill wasn’t able to force the legislation out of a committee where it was buried.  That loss was a victory for the state’s influential beer wholesalers, who say the law works well now and distributors successfully limit illegal consumption and collect taxes.
