The Charlotte area’s largest employer named its new CEO today. Gene Woods will take the helm at Carolinas HealthCare System in April.
Woods comes from one of Texas’ largest hospital systems, CHRISTUS Health, where he was chief operating officer. He’ll also be the next chairman of the American Hospital Association. He speaks Spanish fluently, and his background is primarily with faith-based health systems.
Carolinas HealthCare System’s current CEO, Michael Tarwater, will stay involved through June to help with the transition. Tarwater has been with the system for more than three decades, helping it grow from a single hospital into one of the country’s largest health systems.
In the Charlotte area alone, it employs 35,000 people, according to the Charlotte Chamber. That’s about 12,000 more than the second-biggest employer, Wells Fargo.
