CHESTER, S.C. — Authorities say a shoplifting suspect shot and killed by police in Chester, S.C. had a gun as he tried to run away from officers.

Investigators said 28-year-old Ariane Lamont McCree was killed Saturday outside the Walmart in Chester.

Chester Police Chief Eric Williams told The Herald of Rock Hill that McCree attacked an officer after he was taken into custody and pulled out the gun as he tried to run away.

Williams did not give the officers names, but said they are on leave as the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.

The Walmart was closed for a day while the shooting was investigated. No one else was injured.
