Charlotte Talks: The Future of Responsible Artificial Intelligence

Thursday, May 2, 2019

We are becoming increasingly surrounded by artificial intelligence.  Almost every industry uses A/I in their business.  It’s gotten to the point where corporations and industry leaders are beginning to see the need for best practices and the promotion of “responsible A/I.  A discussion of A/I's ethical challenges and potential unintended consequences.

Artificial intelligence has made its way into many of our daily functions. Companies from almost every industry use A/I to help their business, from driverless cars, to banking and data mining.

Corporations and industry leaders are beginning to see the need for best practices and the promotion of “responsible” A/I.

Charlottean and Bank of America executive Cathy Bessant is at the forefront of this movement, primarily from the perspective of the financial industry. Bessant led Bank of America to begin a partnership with Harvardto create the Council on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.

The council's aim is to monitor the ethical challenges, the dangers, and the potential unintended consequences of A/I.

Cathy Bessant joins us on the next Charlotte Talks, along with Harvard professor Dan Schrag. They'll talk with host Mike Collins about A/I, and some of the areas of focus for responsible A/I, including consumer privacy, transparency and workforce changes.

Guests:

Cathy Bessant, Chief Operations and Technology Officer at Bank of America

Dan Schrag, Co-Director of the Science, Technology and Public Policy Program at the Belfer Center at Harvard’s Kennedy School. The Belfer Center has created the Council on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence. He was a member of President Obama’s council of advisors on science and technology (PCAST)
