  • Walk, walker or roll with us up to 5K! The Wheels & Walker-thon: Empowering Lives Through Mobility fundraiser will help Assist ME, an all-volunteer nonprofit, raise funding to provide medical mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and tub transfer benches to those in need throughout the greater Charlotte region.

We invite all abilities and disabilities to register and celebrate mobility freedom at their comfort level (up to 5K) at the fully accessible Park Road Park in Charlotte. Register solo or form a team! We'll be taking fun photos and live streaming on event day. Easy peer-to-peer fundraising tools are provided. Can't attend? Join our Virtual Walk & Rollers Club!

It may come as a surprise to many that it's hard for those with low incomes and little to no insurance (or have Medicaid gaps) to acquire the mobility equipment they need for accidents, surgery recovery or chronic conditions and disabilities. 75% of our recipients are ages 5-64. We quickly run out of wheelchairs and also accept gently used equipment (see our website for items accepted). Help us bridge these gaps by joining and sharing our event. Let's empower lives through mobility together!

Gates open at 8:00 a.m. with 9:00 a.m. start. Food trucks on site. Free water! Fully accessible with handicap parking and restrooms. Medical mobility devices only: No skateboards, bicycles or non-medical scooters, etc.

For more details, please visit www.assistmenc.com/events. Please share and see you there!

The story is set in the early years of the 20th century. Mary Lennox, an English girl born and raised in the India, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is ten years old. She is sent away from India to the moors of Yorkshire, England, to live in the manor of a brooding uncle she has never met. There, her personality blossoms among the other residents of the manor as they bring new life to a long-neglected garden.

  • The African Children’s Choir is marking over four decades of transforming lives through the power of music, education and hope. As they embark on a tour of more than 100 cities, the Choir will continue to captivate audiences with their heartwarming performances with a show that blends traditional hymns and African cultural sounds, while sharing stories of God’s faithfulness through joyful worship.

Comprised of children ages 8 to 10, all from vulnerable backgrounds across Africa, the African Children’s Choir serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and potential of Africa’s future leaders. Each child in the Choir has faced significant hardship, often with limited access to education. Yet, through the Choir, these children gain life-changing opportunities for education and personal growth, becoming beacons of hope for their communities.

The African Children’s Choir is more than just a choir. It’s part of a larger, international, Christian organization called Music for Life, which provides thousands of impoverished children throughout Africa with the education, discipleship, and leadership skills needed to rise above their conditions so they can bring positive, lasting change to their families, communities, and countries.

  • “Buttons, Bone Handles, and Brick: Contextualizing USC’s Histories Within the 19th Century Atlantic World"
Dr. Kelly Goldberg, Clinical Associate Professor, Director of the USC Public Heritage Lab

The nineteenth century transatlantic slave trade had significant social, political, and economic ramifications for coastal West African environments, and caused reverberations throughout the Atlantic world. Within this environment the University of South Carolina, established in 1801, joined the political landscape as an active participant in global slave trade economies. This talk discusses results from excavations in coastal Guinea and USC's campus as case studies to investigate 19th and 20th century sites throughout the Atlantic world, looking at the ways in which material culture, architectural remains, documentary records, and oral historical accounts are used to interpret the complex social dynamics and multiregional origins of a globally oriented African Diaspora.

  • "Building from Consultation to Collaboration in SC Archaeology"
Dr. Nina Schreiner, Associate Director and NAGPRA Coordinator, South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology

In decades past, archaeologists often studied Indigenous material culture without input from descendant communities. This insular approach to research both undervalued Indigenous perspectives and reinforced retentionist, or anti-repatriation, philosophies of collections care. Today, collaborative methods are gaining momentum among archaeologists to address the historical exclusion of community voices. Alongside community partners, SCIAA is building an institutional collaborative approach using the principles of government-to-government consultation as a starting place.

Presented in person and virtually. To attend via Zoom, register via this link: https://bit.ly/3IFRk0M
