The Lake Norman Orchestra presents a concert at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church on March 30, 2025 at 6 PM.
The Lake Norman Orchestra and Chamber Strings will present a free-admission concert at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, NC on Sunday, March 30 at 6 PM. The 60-member all-volunteer full orchestra will present a wide variety of music. Classical fare will include "Bacchanale" by Saint-Saens, "William Tell Overture" by Rossini, and "Violin Concerto in D major, 3rd movement" by Beethoven. Sarah Bamford will be the featured soloist on this concerto piece. Songs from the Broadway stage include "The Impossible Dream," and selections from "West Side Story." Film music will include a medley of sounds from "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." The LKNO Chamber Strings will present pieces from Gustav Holst's "St. Paul Suite." The orchestra will also present several selections from pop music. Conductor Mr. Samuel A. Kyzer is completing his 4th year at the helm of The Lake Norman Orchestra.
Concert at Laurel Gray Vineyards
The 50-member all-volunteer Lake Norman Orchestra returns to Laurel Gray Vineyards on Sunday, May 18, 2 PM to present a concert in a beautiful mountain setting. The orchestra, led by music director Samuel A. Kyzer, will present lots of classic pop favorites like "Journey's Greatest Hits," "The Empire Strikes Back Medley," "Motown Medley," "The Eagles on Tour," and lots of Beach music. This is the orchestra's 7th and final concert of the 2024-2025 season.
Music on Main Street
The Lake Norman Orchestra will present a free-admission concert on Sunday, April 27, 3 PM at the Joe V. Knox Auditorium at the Mooresville Citizen's Center. The 52-member all-volunteer full orchestra has been active in the Lake Norman area since 2002. This concert will feature music "from classical to classic." Classical adventures will include "Concerto for Horn in E-flat" by Richard Strauss and Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." The orchestra enjoys re-creating music from films such as "Pirates of the Caribbean," "The Empire Strikes Back," and the "Star Trek" series. Classic pop selections will include "Best of the Beatles," "Journey's Greatest Hits," and lots of "beach music." Be prepared for a little "latin" and ""classic country," too.
Symphony Under the Stars
The Lake Norman Orchestra will present an outdoor concert at the newly-redesigned Liberty Park Amphitheater in Mooresville, NC on Friday, October 3 at 7:00 PM. The orchestra will play a wide variety of music including "beach music," "classic rock," as well as classical favorites "Overture 1812," "William Tell Overture (Theme from "The Lone Ranger") The program will also feature vocalist Elizabeth Williams Taylor on Broadway songs---"Think of Me" (Phantom of the Opera), and "Memory" (Cats). The conductor or this all-volunteer community full orchestra is Mr. Samuel A. Kyzer.
Halloween Music at Laurel Gray Vineyards
The Lake Norman Orchestra returns to beautiful Laurel Gray Vineyards-Winery for a free admission Sunday afternoon concert featuring Halloween-theme music. The all-volunteer full orchestra will present "Thriller," "The Monster Mash," "Hotel California," music from Phantom of the Opera, and several "spooky" classical and classic music favorites. A wide variety of refreshments and food will be available during the afternoon. The orchestra is led by music director Mr. Samuel A. Kyzer.
LAWA Annual Gala for Education 2026: Night of a Thousand Dreams
Latin Americans Working for Achievement (LAWA) proudly presents our annual Gala for Education: Night of a Thousand Dreams. This inspiring evening celebrates the hopes, ambitions, and transformative journeys of our students, each dream shining like a star in a vast sky, guiding us toward a brighter future.
Butterflies, a symbol of resilience and change, reflect the courage and perseverance of our scholars as they spread their wings and soar. The theme honors migration and first-generation stories that define so many of our students, weaving together heritage, strength, and the pursuit of something greater.
Join us for a night filled with elegance, purpose, and endless possibilities as we illuminate the path to educational success.

Youth & Family Fishing Derby
Description: A free, family-friendly event featuring fishing lessons, arts & crafts, and volunteer opportunities for all ages. Spanish-speaking coordinator available.

Rock Roulette: Band Building Party
This build-a-band fundraiser puts adults in bands (all genders/ ages 21+). Each band will have one month to come up with 10 minutes of material to perform at an epic Battle of the Bands concert, all while raising funds to support a rad nonprofit that empowers allies and advocates through music and arts!
No instrument instruction is provided. Beginner to Advanced musicians are welcome!
Band Rehearsal space will be pre-determined. Each band must have a minimum of 4 rehearsals and rehearsal locations/dates/times will be coordinated with your band at the kick off event.
Participants will choose their own bands during the kickoff party with the following stipulations:
Each band must have:
1. We Rock Band Leader (one of our designated musician volunteers)
2. Drummer
3. Vocalist (they can also play an instrument at the same time)
4. Minimum of 2 Melody instruments
5. Minimum of 2 gender marginalized people: women, non-binary, or trans folks.
Bands will have their own crowdfunding page for WRC and share it with their circles while working on their set.
On December 6th, we will have our Battle of the Bands concert at Free Range Brewing in NoDa and determine the Rock Roulette winners!
There will be two prizes. One for the crowd favorite (determined by a decibel meter) and whoever raises the most money.
We Rock Charlotte (formerly Girls Rock Charlotte) is a nonprofit that empowers youth and builds community through music, arts, and advocacy. Our mission is empowering allies and advocates through music and arts. Our vision is to be an inclusive, nurturing, creative space that empowers all voices through music and arts in order to create a more just and equitable society. Programs include youth rock camps, stop motion animation workshops, and all ages shows that build confidence, creativity, and connection through self expression.

The Lake Norman Orchestra is presenting a free-admission holiday-themed concert at Mt. Zion UMC on Saturday, December 6, 6 PM. The 60-member all-volunteer full orchestra will perform a wide variety of holiday favorites. Song titles include "Sleigh Ride," "There's Christmas in the Air," "Do You Hear What I Hear?," and many other holiday classics.

The Lake Norman Orchestra will present a free holiday-theme concert. The 60-member all-volunteer full orchestra is led by music director, Mr. Samuel A. Kyzer. Song titles include "Sleigh Ride," "Do You Hear What I Hear?," "There's Christmas in the Air," and many other holiday favorites.
Missa Papae Marcelli and Other Mass Movements Through Time
The Charlotte Chamber Choir presents Missa Papae Marcelli, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s monumental Renaissance masterwork, which legend says saved polyphony for all time, in its entirety.
Accompanying this immortal masterpiece are five select movements of later Masses from the Renaissance to the 20th century, moving in reverse liturgical order - from Agnus Dei to Kyrie - and backward through time. These selections invite listeners to experience the echo of Palestrina’s influence through centuries of great composers and evolving musical languages.
Concerts take place March 14 at Providence United Methodist Church and March 15 at Myers Park Baptist Church, both at 3:30 PM. Tickets are $20, with $5 tickets available for students. Artist Talk with Bill Stronach
The WNC Sculpture Gallery will host an Artist Talk with Bill Stronach on Friday, June 27, 2026, at 5:00 PM, offering visitors an opportunity to hear directly from the longtime Lenoir artist about his exhibition on view from March 14 through June 27, 2026. Known for his thoughtful and technically skilled work in wood and metal, Stronach draws on decades of experience as both an artist and educator, exploring the challenges and character of natural materials through sculptural form. During the talk, Stronach will discuss his creative process, influences, and the evolution of his practice, providing insight into how craftsmanship, material honesty, and problem‑solving shape his work. The event will take place at the WNC Sculpture Gallery, located at 4612 Patterson School Drive in Lenoir, and is open to the public.

Third Saturday Family Workshop Series
The WNC Sculpture Center’s Third Saturday Family Workshop series invites families to gather once a month for hands-on, creative experiences that blend art-making, learning, and quality time together. Held every third Saturday, each workshop features a different accessible, family-friendly project—ranging from sculpture and printmaking to mixed‑media creations—designed to encourage collaboration across generations. Led by knowledgeable staff and artists, the workshops often include opportunities to explore the sculpture park, helping participants connect creativity with place. The series emphasizes creativity, shared experiences, and making meaningful keepsakes, making it a welcoming entry point for families to engage with the arts together.
Iron Light 2026: Iron Pour Event
Iron Light is the Western North Carolina Sculpture Center’s signature cast‑iron sculpture residency and public arts gathering, combining intensive artist collaboration with hands‑on community engagement. Held annually, Iron Light brings visiting and resident sculptors together on site for mold‑making, iron pour preparation, fabrication, and installation, culminating in a dramatic public iron pour where visitors can watch molten iron transformed into sculpture in real time. Community participation is central to the event, with opportunities for the public to engage alongside artists through demonstrations, iron tile and mold activities, and artist talks. The event atmosphere is celebratory and inclusive, featuring live music, food trucks, and family‑friendly programming, making Iron Light both an artistic spectacle and a social gathering that connects people to the creative process through fire, metal, and shared experience. The event is free and open to the public.
Event Schedule:
12pm-4pm: Community scratch block mold workshop - create your own cast iron artwork to be poured during the event ($75 per mold)
4pm: Live music and food trucks begin
5pm-8pm: Live iron pour demonstration
The Adam Church Band at Roots in the Garden
Join us for the grand opening of our stage with hometown favorite, The Adam Church Band!
Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., with the ribbon-cutting and remarks set for 5 p.m. Music starts at 5:30 p.m.
* Beer and wine available for purchase. Picnics welcome
* Please note, no dogs or glass containers in the Gardens
* Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating

The Roots in the Garden concert series also features visual artists, with their work auctioned off at the end of the evening, and will continue on Thursday evenings throughout the summer: June 18, July 16, July 30, and Aug. 20.
Admission is a $5 suggested donation. All proceeds will support the Gardens’ mission to promote the benefits of native plants and healthy ecosystems, and provide a community green space in the heart of the High Country.
FDA move to ban formaldehyde in hair straighteners called too little, too late
The FDA will soon move to ban formaldehyde in hair-straightening products. It's more than a decade after research raised alarms about health risks and other worrying chemicals remain in the products.
