Controversy and conflict surround Charlotte City Council. How do they move forward?

City of Charlotte

There is no shortage of news coming from the Charlotte City Council these days.

An old face has become a new face as Edwin Peacock fills out the remainder of Tariq Bokhari’s term. In a tie vote broken by Mayor Vi Lyles, Peacock was recently appointed. Bokhari left his District 6 post in April for a job with the Trump administration. Bokhari is now deputy administrator of the Federal Transit Administration.

Texts by Bokhari to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings led to controversy and a $305,000 settlement. Jennings also announced his plans for retirement at the end of this year.

We'll also hear more on the recent federal indictment charges against council member Tiawana Brown. Brown and her two daughters have been charged with fraud related to pandemic relief funds, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of North Carolina. According to the indictment, Brown and her daughters improperly received $124,000 in relief funds. Brown has denied the charges. She and her daughters pleaded not guilty this past Friday.

All this, and much more, on the next Charlotte Talks.
