Local news in trouble. The media landscape here took another hit last week as McClatchy, the parent company of the Charlotte Observer, eliminated a quarter of its newsroom. This comes after years of downsizing at the paper, and McClatchy is doing the same across its properties nationwide. What this means and what, if anything, can be done to keep news healthy.

Charlotte has lost another print publication. Alternative newspaper Queen City Nerve announced this week it’s closing effective immediately, citing financial hardships. It follows Charlotte magazine shutting down last year, after nearly six decades. The alt-weekly newspaper grew out of the closure of Creative Loafing’s Charlotte newsroom in 2018. Editor-in-chief Ryan Pitkin says falling advertising revenue and the collapse of a potential sale ultimately forced Queen City Nerve to close down.
