COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina Senate subcommittee has stripped protections for women who become pregnant from rape or incest from a bill that would outlaw abortions in that state after about six weeks of pregnancy.

President Donald Trump will deliver the keynote address at a criminal justice reform forum in Columbia, South Carolina, next Friday, a White House official confirmed.

Trump will share billing at the event with a handful of some of the top Democrats attempting to replace him in 2020, including Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. The Democrats will speak Saturday and Sunday.

Representative Trey Gowdy made a surprising announcement on Wednesday. The South Carolina Republican is quitting politics and will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Keith Lawrence Ross, 30, was found fatally shot in a home in north Charlotte in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to the home on the 2900 block of Botany Street at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arriving, officers found Ross inside with a gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.

South Carolina's gas tax will be raised 12 cents over the next six years after the South Carolina legislature voted overwhelmingly to override Gov. Henry McMaster's veto of the measure.

The House voted 95-18 Wednesday morning to override the governor, and the Senate voted 32-12 to do the same hours later.

So South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is headed to New York, to represent the U.S. at the United Nations. Her appointment by president-elect Donald Trump was a bit of a surprise, given that she hasn't been a big Trump supporter.
