Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

Last week, Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle put up over 200 yards of offense in a win against the Miami Dolphins. On Sunday, he did it again against the Dallas Cowboys to help the Panthers to 30-27 win, giving the team a .500 record for the first time since 2021."Like I've been saying all week, the main thing, just wanted to get that win, big, big for me, but also big for the organization, you know, getting the .500 and protecting the home field 3-0 at home, so just gotta continue to keep building, but definitely was huge getting that win," he said. The Panthers visit the winless New York Jets on Sunday.

Governor Josh Stein announced Wednesday that the state will offer rewards for help solving two local murder cases. North Carolina is offering $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murders of 80-year-old Charles Williams and three-year-old Myisha Angle in Salisbury last August. They were asleep when more than 30 shots were fired into their house, killing them both.In Stanly County, the state is offering a $25,000 reward for information in the murder of six-year-old Chance Douglas Smith near Locust in 2003. He was found in a horse pasture with a head wound after being reported missing and died shortly after.

The Charlotte Hornets begin training camp on Tuesday and start preseason games this weekend. The team’s rookie class had a strong offseason, winning the Summer League championship. At media day, forward Brandon Miller said he’s eager to play with the new-look Hornets including rookies Kon Knueppel, Liam McNeeley and Ryan Kalkbrenner.

Just a week after looking like they were on the right track in a blowout win over Atlanta, the Carolina Panthers looked like a completely different team on Sunday and were blown out themselves in a 42-13 loss to the New England Patriots. Coach Dave Canales said after the game, he’s looking inward for answers.“When it’s a full team effort like this, um, I have to put that on myself. I have to look at how I’m preparing the team, how we’re going about our work. I have to look at that and compete to find an edge to get these guys to work together, to focus," he said. The Panthers now stand at 1-3 on the season. They’ll host the Miami Dolphins Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

The Union County NAACP is calling for the removal of Monroe Mayor Robert Burns after social media posts in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s murder. At Tuesday night’s Monroe City Council meeting, the group’s president, Archie Hansley, said Burns used his official platform to target private citizens and incite violence by tagging far right social media accounts like Libs of Tik Tok.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after one of its officers was charged with DWI over the weekend. CMPD says North Division Officer Matt Wilson was involved in a crash in Montgomery County on Sunday and the State Highway Patrol found probable cause to charge him with DWI.Wilson is currently on unpaid administrative leave during the investigation.
