Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

In college basketball, the Davidson Wildcats won the Hornets’ Nest Trophy on Tuesday night in their annual matchup with the Charlotte 49ers 75-71. Both teams built and lost double-digit leads in the game. Reed Bailey led Davidson with 18 points. Nik Graves led Charlotte with 23.

The injury-riddled Charlotte Hornets snapped an eight-game losing streak Sunday night, downing the Indiana Pacers, 113-109. Brandon Miller led Charlotte with 26 points, and coach Charles Lee said he’s emerging as a leader.

The Carolina Panthers lost another close game on Sunday, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 22-16. A late drop of a potential go-ahead touchdown by receiver Xavier Legette dashed the Panthers' hopes.

The Charlotte Hornets lost the opener in their five-game homestand Monday night, falling to the Orlando Magic 95-84. LaMelo Ball had 44 of those points but coach Charles Lee said after the game that turnovers were the problem with the Hornets committing 26.

The Charlotte Hornets built a 17 point lead, lost it, then clawed their way back into the NBA in-season tournament game in Brooklyn Tuesday night before falling to the Nets 116-115. Coach Charles Lee sat LaMelo Ball at the end and stuck with Tre Mann.

Portions of Union Street in Concord are reopening after more than 18 months of construction on its new streetscape project that widens sidewalk areas through the city’s primary downtown corridor. Most of the work is expected to be complete before next weekend’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and parade.
