Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

The Charlotte Hornets begin training camp on Tuesday and start preseason games this weekend. The team’s rookie class had a strong offseason, winning the Summer League championship. At media day, forward Brandon Miller said he’s eager to play with the new-look Hornets including rookies Kon Knueppel, Liam McNeeley and Ryan Kalkbrenner.

Just a week after looking like they were on the right track in a blowout win over Atlanta, the Carolina Panthers looked like a completely different team on Sunday and were blown out themselves in a 42-13 loss to the New England Patriots. Coach Dave Canales said after the game, he’s looking inward for answers.“When it’s a full team effort like this, um, I have to put that on myself. I have to look at how I’m preparing the team, how we’re going about our work. I have to look at that and compete to find an edge to get these guys to work together, to focus," he said. The Panthers now stand at 1-3 on the season. They’ll host the Miami Dolphins Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

The Union County NAACP is calling for the removal of Monroe Mayor Robert Burns after social media posts in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s murder. At Tuesday night’s Monroe City Council meeting, the group’s president, Archie Hansley, said Burns used his official platform to target private citizens and incite violence by tagging far right social media accounts like Libs of Tik Tok.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after one of its officers was charged with DWI over the weekend. CMPD says North Division Officer Matt Wilson was involved in a crash in Montgomery County on Sunday and the State Highway Patrol found probable cause to charge him with DWI.Wilson is currently on unpaid administrative leave during the investigation.

The Carolina Panthers won by the largest margin in a decade yesterday when they blew out the Atlanta Falcons 30-0 in the home opener. Chau Smith-Wade got an interception he returned for a touchdown in a dominant performance for the defense, but coach Dave Canales said just about everything clicked for his team in their first win of the season

The Carolina Panthers not only lost their game Sunday in Arizona, they also lost two offensive linemen. Center Austin Corbett injured his left knee and guard Robert Hunt tore his left bicep. Both have been placed on injured reserve, which means they’ll miss at least a month. The Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons Sunday.

After a 3-nil win over Inter Miami Saturday night, Charlotte FC has clinched a Major League Soccer playoff spot. Idan Toklomati scored all three goals. Coach Dean Smith said the Israeli forward is coming into his own.

Starting Monday, Hickory’s Riverwalk overwater bridge will be closed to the public for electrical repairs to the lighting system and conduit, which were damaged during Hurricane Helene. The work is expected to take four to six weeks to complete. All other portions of the elevated Riverwalk trail will remain open.
