Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Internal Affairs Division is conducting an investigation into the arrest of CMPD Officer Stephen Brown outside of the CMPD jurisdiction on Monday.CMPD says Brown was arrested by the Clover Police Department in York, South Carolina and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Officer Brown was off duty at the time of his arrest.He is currently on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Officer Brown was hired in 2006, and his most recent assignment was the Airport Division.

Charlotte, Rock Hill, Huntersville, Raleigh and Durham were among the Carolinas cities that saw more protests of Trump administration policies over the weekend. The events were among 700 across the country organized by the “50-50-1 movement,” a loosely organized group that began on Reddit with a push for “50 protests in 50 states on 1 day.”

Charlotte is now in first place in Major League Soccer’s eastern Conference after Saturday’s 3-nil win over San Diego. The team has won all five home matches this season and eight straight overall. Coach Dean Smith said after the win his team is off to a good start but knows there’s still a long way to go.

Bishop Michael Martin of the Charlotte Diocese has released a statement on the death of Pope Francis early Monday morning at the age of 88.Martin said in part: “I am deeply saddened by the death of Pope Francis and join with Catholics of the Diocese of Charlotte and around the world in mourning the loss of our shepherd. There will be time to celebrate the life and legacy of Pope Francis in the days ahead, but for now I invite anyone and everyone to join us in prayer.”
