Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

The Charlotte Hornets dropped another home game Sunday night, losing 115-106 to the Denver Nuggets. The loss came just days after a road win in Toronto, but Charlotte now stands at 7-17 on the season.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has launched a new public safety initiative aimed at curbing rising violence in and around uptown.The effort, called Operation Safe Season, will significantly increase police presence and enforcement over the next several weekends. CMPD says the multi-agency operation will focus initially on uptown, with plans to expand into other areas experiencing repeated violence and criminal activity.

The measles outbreak centered in and around Spartanburg County has sharply grown, with 14 new cases reported — double the number in the previous update — and four more schools now implementing quarantines, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

The Charlotte Hornets’ two-game winning streak ended on the road Monday night with a 116–103 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Rookie Kon Knueppel led Charlotte with 18 points, and LaMelo Ball added 14 assists in the effort.The Hornets continue their three-game road trip Tuesday night, when they visit Madison Square Garden to face the New York Knicks.Charlotte returns home Sunday night to play the Denver Nuggets.

Local leaders say they are mostly prepared for Iryna’s Law, which takes effect Monday. House Bill 307 was passed in response to the August killing of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail system, and it tightens pretrial release conditions for people who are arrested — particularly those with mental health concerns.

December marks the return of Christmas lights in McAdenville, where the town will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony for Christmastown USA on Monday in Gaston County. Much of the town will be illuminated through Dec. 26, and officials expect heavy traffic as nearly half a million visitors make their way through the community during the season. The tradition dates back to 1956.

The treasurer of a Parent Teacher Student Organization in Union County has been charged with embezzlement. The Union County Sheriff’s Office says 53-year-old Rachel Cluna had been improperly diverting funds from the PTSO at Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw for use on online gambling platforms. It said early findings revealed 61 transactions totaling approximately $85,000 linked to the sites. Detectives say they identified a larger pattern of unauthorized activity, uncovering a total of more than $300,000 in misappropriated funds. The sheriff’s office says Cluna was released on a $100,000 bond.

Two men involved in separate incidents have been charged in federal court for allegedly using their vehicles to assault, resist, or impede federal officers conducting immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte. That’s according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Russ Ferguson.

Johnson C. Smith University has claimed its first football championship in 56 years. The Golden Bulls defeated two-time defending CIAA champion Virginia Union on Saturday, winning the conference title with a 45–21 victory.
