Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

Charlotte FC struggled on a wet, cold evening at Bank of America Stadium and lost game 1 of the best-of-three series to New York City 1-nil on Tuesday. Team captain Ashley Westwood said a sluggish start doomed Charlotte.

A new poll from Winthrop University shows congresswoman Nancy Mace and Lt. Governor Pam Evette leading the pack in the race to become South Carolina’s next Governor. It finds the duo in a statistical tie among Republican registered voters over congressman Ralph Norman and state Attorney General Alan Wilson.Mace is at about 17%, Evette is at 16%, Norman and Wilson are both at about 8% and Kimbrell is just over 3%. State Senator Josh Kimbrel is a distant fifth. More than 46% say they’re still undecided in the November 2026 election.

All 21 Mecklenburg County polling places are open for the final week of early voting before the November municipal elections. More than 17,000 voters had cast ballots before today, according to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

The Carolina Panthers’ three-game winning streak came to a decisive end Sunday as the Buffalo Bills rolled to a 40-9 victory at Bank of America Stadium. Bills running back James Cook led the charge with 216 yards and two touchdowns. Panthers backup quarterback Andy Dalton, starting in place of the injured Bryce Young, committed a fumble and an interception. At least five Panthers players left the game with injuries.

Two dead after shooting, home invasion, kidnapping, car chase, shootout near uptown during rush hourTwo people are dead after a car chase and shootout with police in northwest Charlotte yesterday that ended just outside uptown. CMPD says officers responded to shots being fired on Hoskins Road at Black Avenue at about 4 pm, where they found two people with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a hospital, where one later died. Police say the suspect then forced his way into a home nearby, kidnapped a resident and left in a stolen vehicle.

The Concord Fire Department says one person has died after an overnight fire at an RV park off Morehead Road and Highway 29 in the southwest part of the city. It happened just before 1 am on Friday.

The City of Salisbury has been awarded $850,000 through the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Rural Transformation Grant Fund. It will support renovations to a 30,000-square-foot building located on South Main Street, formerly known as the Wells Fargo Building, with improvements to lighting, flooring, fire and HVAC systems. When completed, the facility will house event and office space.

The Charlotte Hornets won their season opener Wednesday night in the newly renovated Spectrum Center, downing the Brooklyn Nets 136-117 in front of a capacity crowd of more than 19,500 fans. Nine Hornets scored in double figures, including rookies Kon Knueppel and Ryan Kalkbrenner who both started. Brandon Miller led the way with 25 points.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have made one arrest after four separate murders in the city from Saturday morning to Sunday morning. The last involved a shooting on Wilkinson Boulevard at about 1:20 Sunday morning.

Charlotte FC beat Major League Soccer’s best team — the Philadelphia Union — 2-0 on Saturday night, to secure home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They’ll take on New York City FC a week from Tuesday in uptown Charlotte, but they’ll do it without one of their best players. Wilfred Zaha got a red card penalty in Saturday’s game, meaning he has to miss the next contest, the playoff opener.
