Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

The treasurer of a Parent Teacher Student Organization in Union County has been charged with embezzlement. The Union County Sheriff’s Office says 53-year-old Rachel Cluna had been improperly diverting funds from the PTSO at Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw for use on online gambling platforms. It said early findings revealed 61 transactions totaling approximately $85,000 linked to the sites. Detectives say they identified a larger pattern of unauthorized activity, uncovering a total of more than $300,000 in misappropriated funds. The sheriff’s office says Cluna was released on a $100,000 bond.

Two men involved in separate incidents have been charged in federal court for allegedly using their vehicles to assault, resist, or impede federal officers conducting immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte. That’s according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Russ Ferguson.

Johnson C. Smith University has claimed its first football championship in 56 years. The Golden Bulls defeated two-time defending CIAA champion Virginia Union on Saturday, winning the conference title with a 45–21 victory.

Despite an agreement in the Senate to end the government shutdown, air travel will still be slowed with cancellations and delays expected to escalate this week as the Federal Aviation Administration struggles with a shortage of air traffic controllers. At Charlotte Douglas, 150 flights were cancelled Saturday — the highest for any airport in the nation. On Monday, Charlotte is showing 49 flights cancelled and 35 more delayed, as of 9 am. Airport officials are encouraging travelers to stay in touch with their airline for updates and arrive at the terminal even earlier than normal.

For the first time since the 1970s, Johnson C. Smith will play for the CIAA football championship. The Golden Bulls beat Livingstone over the weekend to reach the title game. They’ll face defending champion Virginia Union Saturday at 3 p.m. in Durham.

Just when it looked like the Carolina Panthers had turned the corner with a big win against a good team last week, they crashed back to earth on Sunday, losing 17-7 at home to the New Orleans Saints who were 1-8 coming in. Quarterback Bryce Young was frustrated after throwing for just over 100 yards with an interception.

Cabarrus County Commissioner Lynn Shue has died after lengthy health challenges. The former Cabarrus School Board chairman has served as a county commissioner since 2014. He had received two life-saving organ transplants and was undergoing treatment when some county commissioners tried to appoint Lamarie Austin-Stripling to a vacant seat on the board in April, but a court blocked the move.

A manufacturing plant in McAdenville is announcing plans to shut down and lay off nearly 300 workers. According to a state filing, New Jersey-based Mannington Mills will shut down its Gaston County carpet manufacturing plant on Dec. 27. The company is citing a “continual decline in demand and unfavorable market conditions.”
