Morning NewscasterWoody is a Charlotte native who came to WFAE from the world of NASCAR where he was host of NASCAR Today for MRN Radio as well as a pit reporter, turn announcer and host of the NASCAR Live pre race show for Cup Series races. Before that, he was a news anchor at WBT radio in Charlotte, a traffic reporter, editor of The Charlotte Observer’s University City Magazine, News/Sports Director at WEGO-AM in Concord and a Swiss Army knife in local cable television. His first job after graduating from Appalachian State University was news reporter at The Daily Independent in Kannapolis. Along the way he’s covered everything from murder trials and a national political convention to high school sports and minor league baseball.

Students in the Rowan-Salisbury school system get back to class Thursday. Cabarrus County students return Monday (Aug. 11). Kannapolis City Schools start Tuesday (Aug. 12), Gaston County goes back to class Wednesday (Aug. 13). Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools start back on Aug. 25.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 38-year-old, Latino male resident in custody at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office says at 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, the man was found unresponsive at the Detention Center. He was pronounced deceased at 12:44 p.m. The sheriff’s office says more details will be released once next of kin has been notified.

Charlotte’s National Night Out event has been postponed until next Tuesday, Aug. 12, due to Tuesday's rain. The celebration of local community officers with safety programs, games, music and refreshments is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. next Tuesday at Victoria Yards on East Seventh Street. Cornelius has canceled its event and tentatively rescheduled for Oct. 7.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican who represents the Lowcountry congressional district, has formally kicked off her bid for the GOP nomination for South Carolina governor. She posted a minute-long video on her website Sunday night.

Monday is the first day of school for many in South Carolina, and students across York County are among those back in class. All four York County districts and Chester County schools started back Monday. Lancaster County schools start Aug. 12.

Charlotte FC has won four straight matches to put themselves firmly back in the playoff battle. On Saturday night, they beat Toronto FC 2-nil and now sit seventh in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference standings. Coach Dean Smith says his team is recovering the form that had them atop the standings back in April before falling back to ninth."Pleased that we've won four, you know, still doesn't take away the pain from May, you know, but, yeah, it's good that we've put ourselves in the chase again," he said.Charlotte takes a three-game break from Major League Soccer competition this week for League’s Cup play, starting Thursday night at home against FC Juarez.

In Rock Hill over the weekend, Republican Rep. Ralph Norman said he’s running for South Carolina governor."I'm running for governor to shake things up. We're going to clean up Colombia and finally we're going to take down the corrupt political establishment once and for all," he said.Norman is being endorsed by both former governor and U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley and former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. The 72-year-old Norman, joins several other announced candidates, including Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, in the race for next June’s GOP primary, and Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina’s 1st District is soon expected to announce her campaign.
