A second try at a conviction for a 1987 rape
A man is on trial for raping a 12-year-old girl in Goldsboro in 1987. William Neal lived around the corner from the girl at that time. The victim testified this week describing the attack. Neal isn't the first man tried for the crime. Dwayne Dail a Goldsboro man was convicted in 1989 and spent 19 years in prison for the crime he did not commit. Dail was released in 2007 after DNA evidence showed he did not rape the girl. WFAE spoke with him in 2008 when he came to talk to students at Johnson C Smith and the Charlotte School of Law. "My mindset changed so many times over the time I was in prison. I went from being very angry to being very bitter. Then I went from being bitter to being better," said Dail. The Raleigh News and Observer reports Dail has struggled since his release and doesn't plan to attend the trial. He says he's worried seeing Neal would derail whatever progress he has made.
