Big SC Jobs Announced From Bridgestone
Bridgestone Americas Thursday said it will build a new tire manufacturing plant in Aiken County, South Carolina and bring 850 new jobs to the region. South Carolina Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt says Bridgestone will invest $1.2 billion expanding an existing plant and building a second facility. He calls it the largest initial investment by a company in the state's history. "This is a real special announcement cause this is a company that's been with us and could have picked anyplace in the world," says Hitt. "In fact, this is only the second place in the world that they will build this off-road radial tire which is a very extraordinary high-tech tire which has an enormous amount of technology and value to it." Bridgestone Americas will receive $15.5 million in grants from the state of South Carolina to help pay for road improvements and plant construction. The company will also qualify for millions in tax credits if it fulfills its promise to create new jobs. Hitt says construction will start next month, but it will be eight years before all of the 850 new jobs are filled.
