Truex Jr. Wins NASCAR Championship

Martin Truex Jr. is this year’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series champion.  It’s the first time the 37-year-old Truex has won the championship. He won Sunday’s final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, his 8th win of the year. Sunday’s race was the last for the retiring Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Truex thanked Earnhardt on Sunday. He noted that Earnhardt hired him in 2003 to race to race for his team.

“You know Dale gave me my opportunity to move to North Carolina to race cars for a living,” Truex said after Sunday’s race.  “I wouldn’t be here today without him.  My path would for surely be different.”

Earnhardt placed 25th Sunday. Sunday’s race was also the final as full-time drivers for Danica Patrick and Matt Kenseth.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
