Mecklenburg Commissioners To Decide On Arts Tax Tonight
The Mecklenburg County Commission is scheduled to vote tonight on placing a proposed tax hike to support local arts on the November ballot.
The proposal would raise the county’s sales tax by a quarter cent, up to 7.5 percent - and would generate an estimated $50 million a year. About half of that would go directly to the Arts and Science Council, which funds many local arts organizations, but has been struggling to bring donations in recent years. The rest of the funds would go toward education, parks, and greenways. Mecklenburg’s six towns would also split about $2.5 million from the increase.
During a meeting last week, a number of commissioners signaled their support for placing the referendum on the ballot.
Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the government center.
