Giant American Flag In Statesville Can Keep Flying

Camping World, Flag
GANDER OUTDOORS

A giant American flag will continue to fly over a Gander RV dealership along Interstate 77 in Statesville.

City Council reached an agreement Monday with dealership owner Camping World that ends an ongoing dispute over the size of the flag. Under the agreement, Camping World will pay about $16,000 in fines and court fees and the city will change its ordinance to allow the 40-foot-by-80-foot flag.

Statesville earlier this year sued Camping World and sought a fine of $50 a day going back to October 2018 until the flag was removed. Camping World CEO and star of the reality TV show "The Profit" Marcus Lemonis refused to take the flag down and said he was willing to go to jail over it.

The company is known for raising huge American flags at its locations.

In 2018, the city set maximum flag sizes at 25 feet by 40 feet in part to prevent displays of oversize Confederate flags.

Under the settlement, the company will apply for the flag ordinance to be amended in the zoning district where the RV dealership is located and the City Council will vote to approve the request, according to the Statesville Record & Landmark.
