Charlotte Talks: Nation's Top Public School Teacher Is From Gaston County

Gaston County Schools

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

The nation’s top teacher, Bobbie Cavnar, from South Point High in Belmont talks about excellence in teaching and why, after all the accolades he’s received, he stays in the classroom.

The nation's top teacher works in a classroom right down the road in Gaston County. The NEA Foundation named Bobbie Cavnar, a British Literature teacher at South Point High School in Belmont the nation's best teacherfor 2018.

Previously, Cavnar was recognized as North Carolina's Teacher of the Year in 2016. That honor has catapulted some public school educators to positions outside of the classroom. But Cavnar, a longtime ambassador for public education, says nothing has tempted him away from teaching.

He sees a need for more focus on arts and the humanities in public schools and believes the arts help teach empathy, something he says is desperately needed in today's society.

Cavnar has also been outspoken about the shooting at a Florida high school. In fact, his teaching career began with a student teaching internship at Marjory Stoneman Douglas where 17 people were killed earlier this month.

He has some ideas about how to save schools from violence. Mike Collins talks with him about that and more.
