Our special week-long examination of the elusive work-life balance continues with a look at attitudes and the reality of paid family leave.

This is the third in a special series about work-life balance. Details.

It’s our special work-life balance series on "Charlotte Talks" this week.

So far we’ve covered finding balance in our over-worked culture, and the challenges of finding affordable childcare, but what about paid parental leave for new parents?

This hour on "Charlotte Talks" we delve deep into the family leave policies here in Charlotte, statewide in North Carolina and nationwide.

In other countries, paid parental leave is a given, but here in America, most people are not guaranteed paid family leave.

There have been trends here and there moving towards more paid family leave in America. Some members of Congress have introduced legislation, and some presidential candidates have addressed their plans for improved family leave, but no widespread national policies have been adopted.

We’ll talk about the status of parental leave policy in Charlotte and beyond, and its importance as a health issue and as an economic issue, when "Charlotte Talks."

Guests:

Kenny Colbert, President and CEO of the Employers Association in Charlotte

Dr. Kimberly Montez, Winston-Salem area pediatrician

Vicki Shabo, Senior Fellow, Paid Leave Policy and Strategy, Better Life Lab at New America, a think tank that focuses on several issues including gender equity and health.
