Elyse Dashew was unanimously elected to chair the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board Tuesday, the first new chairperson since Mary McCray was first elected in 2012.
McCray and board member Ericka Ellis-Stewart didn't run this year. New at-large members Lenora Shipp and Jennifer De La Jara were sworn in Tuesday, along with Dashew, who was elected to a second four-year term.
Dashew, who was vice chair during the past year, was quickly chosen as chair, with Thelma Byers-Bailey getting a unanimous vote for vice chair.

Board members said their farewells to Ellis-Stewart and McCray, who served eight years.
"This hard and messy and life-changing work is your legacy," Dashew told them. "Please know that this board is going to carry that legacy forward."
