Governor Pat McCrory called for the state's department of transportation to implement better design and planning of roads and highways during the Highway Safety Symposium Monday in Concord. He says the Concord Mills Mall exit on I-85 is an example of a poorly designed interchange. It's also the busiest corridor in all of Cabarrus County.

"There's no doubt that this very important interchange is poorly designed, not only for cars, but for pedestrians," McCrory says. "And this is a major travel and tourism destination and the access between the travel and tourism destinations is pitiful."

Concord City Council wants an additional overpass to ease congestion and sidewalks to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. The project is estimated to cost $9 million. McCrory says he's working with the mayor of Concord to determine how much the city and state should put toward the project before seeking federal funds.
