SouthBound Replay: Dale Earnhardt Jr. grapples with his family's legacy

Today we’re replaying my 2018 conversation with Dale Earnhardt Jr.

I thought it was a good time to bring this one back because there’s a new documentary on his dad, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. Dale Jr. is an executive producer on the film, along with others including Ron Howard.

Dale and Dale Jr. had a famously complicated relationship, all the way until the moment Dale Earnhardt died in a crash at the Daytona 500 in 2001.

Dale Jr. became one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers, even as he struggled with anxiety, concussions and his father’s shadow.

When we talked, Dale Jr. was in between milestones: He hadn’t been long retired, and his wife, Amy, was about to give birth to their first daughter. They have two daughters now.

It’s interesting, I think, to listen to Dale Jr. at this moment, as he pulls together the threads of his fascinating life. Hope y’all enjoy.

Tommy Tomlinson has hosted the podcast SouthBound for WFAE since 2017. He also does a commentary, On My Mind, which airs every Monday.
