Breaking The Color Barrier In College Basketball
9:00, Thursday, February 19, 2015
This weekend is the public memorial for legendary UNC-Chapel Hill basketball coach Dean Smith. We've been hearing many stories about his career, and one that stands out is his role in integrating college basketball in the South. One of his first African-American players, Bill Chamberlain, will join us to share his story. And we'll hear from authors who've written about the other brave men who helped diversify SEC and ACC basketball.
Bill Chamberlain - former UNC basketball player (1969 - 1972), played under Dean Smith
Barry Jacobs - County Commissioner for Orange County in North Carolina. He’s the author of Across the Line: Profiles in Basketball Courage: Tales of the First Black Players in the ACC and SEC
Andrew Maraniss - author of Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South
