Charlotte Talks: Gearing Up For The Census As The Dust Settles On The Citizenship Question

U.S. Census Bureau

Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019

There's a lot at stake for Mecklenburg County and communities across North Carolina in next year's census, from political representation to billions of dollars in federal funds. Now that the fight over a citizenship question is over, what's being done to get a complete head count?

In less than eight months, census takers will be fanning out across the country for the crucial once-a-decade headcount.

For more than a year, the groundwork for the census has been overshadowed by the Trump administration’s failed quest to add a citizenship question, which would have intimidated millions of people from participating.

Although that’s no longer hanging over the census, there are still challenges for those trying to get an accurate count in North Carolina.
