As Diorio sets eyes on retirement, we discuss the county budget and her tenure as county manager

Outgoing Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio.

On the next Charlotte Talks, we sit down with outgoing Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio. Last week, she presented her county budget for the last time — she retires later this summer.

Diorio proposed fully funding Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ budget request. The $2.5 billion operating budget fully funds CMS’ more than $666 million request. That’s more than 4% higher than the county’s allotment from last year. With another $33 million in capital maintenance expenses for the district, CMS would receive a total of $699 million — 40% of the county’s total general fund.

Diorio says a small increase is necessary to keep up with needs of the county and the CMS budget request, so she is suggesting a property tax increase.

Diorio and Mecklenburg County Budget Director Adrian Cox join Charlotte Talks to discuss the proposed budget and to answer your questions. We’ll also hear what’s next for Diorio.
