Property owners in Mecklenburg County may be in for a surprise come January when the county sends out new tax values.
County officials are warning that many property values went up significantly. The county estimates the median home value rose 38 percent and commercial property increased 79 percent.
County Commissioner for District 5 Matthew Ridenhour warned property owners of the higher values at Wednesday night’s commission meeting.
“Be forewarned that might be something you see,” Ridenhour said. “If you see a higher valuation, it does not mean it’s 2011 all over again. We’re predicting there will be significantly increased values.”
Problems with the revaluation process in 2011 made property values appear to shoot up. The county received thousands of disputes over the values and ended up having to issue millions in refunds.
