The murder of Iryna Zarutska on the Blue Line in August led to the passage of Iryna’s Law by the General Assembly. It took effect on Dec. 1 and is designed to overhaul parts of the judicial system. A Republican bill, it passed with some bipartisan support and was signed by a Democratic governor, yet there were still opponents. We discuss the new law and more with caucus leader Rep. Mary Belk.

NC Supreme Court Chief Justice starts pretrial release task force after Charlotte killing
North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby has launched a pretrial release task force in the wake of Iryna Zarutska’s murder. In a press release Newby says the task force will assess current practices and procedures to evaluate whether they adequately balance the need for judicial discretion with the need for consistency in decision making.

The Mecklenburg County Republican Party on Wednesday announced plans to hold a candlelight vigil for Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian woman fatally stabbed on the Charlotte light rail last month.
Sheriff McFadden defends potential collaboration with DaBaby
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden on Tuesday pushed back against criticism for pursuing a potential collaboration with rapper DaBaby. On Monday, he posted a photo with DaBaby in his office and said they’re looking to work together. McFadden brushed off DaBaby’s past arrests and said he’ll meet with anyone interested in helping with issues like violence, suicide and mental health. McFadden also said the Sheriff’s Office was not involved with a music video that DaBaby shot on the Blue Line light rail last month, reenacting Iryna Zarutska’s killing with actors.
